Ellicottville’s Spring Awakening

Spring in Ellicottville is a well-kept secret. While the ski crowds thin out, the village transforms — patios open, trails emerge from the snowmelt, and the surrounding hills turn impossibly green. It’s quieter, warmer, and arguably the most beautiful time to visit.

This is when the locals reclaim their town. The restaurants roll out spring menus, the breweries start pouring seasonal ales, and the hiking trails through the Enchanted Mountains offer views that rival anything you’ll see in fall. If you want to experience Ellicottville without the crowds — and at a fraction of the winter price — spring is your move.

Friday Evening

Ease Into the Weekend

5:00 PM

Check in and stretch your legs

Drop your bags and take a walk through the village. The air is crisp, the streets are quiet, and you can already feel the pace slow down. Spring evenings in EVL have a golden-hour glow that hits different.

6:30 PM

Dinner at West Rose

The spring menu here is worth the trip alone. Locally sourced ingredients, seasonal specials, and a wine list that pairs perfectly with a slow Friday night. Sit by the window and watch the village wake up for the weekend.

8:30 PM

Drinks at Ellicottville Brewing Company

The taproom is buzzing but not packed — peak spring energy. Try whatever seasonal is on tap. The Blueberry Wheat is a year-round icon, but the spring ales are where the brewers really show off.

Saturday

Trails & Village Life

8:00 AM

Breakfast at Katy's Cafe

Strong coffee, fresh pastries, and a relaxed vibe. Katy's is the kind of place where everyone seems to know each other — and by your second visit, they'll know you too.

9:30 AM

Hike the Finger Lakes Trail

The trails around Ellicottville are stunning in spring — wildflowers, rushing creeks, and views of the valley that open up as the canopy fills in. The McCarty Hill State Forest loop is a local favorite, about 4 miles round trip with moderate elevation.

12:30 PM

Lunch on a patio

Spring is patio season in EVL. Grab a seat outside at Dina's for wood-fired pizza and a cocktail, or hit the deck at The Gin Mill for burgers and people-watching on Washington Street.

2:00 PM

Browse the village shops

Washington Street has 24+ shops and spring is when the new inventory arrives. Pick up handmade goods at Kazoo II, browse the gallery, or find something unexpected at one of the boutiques. Take your time — there's no rush.

4:00 PM

Craft beverage trail

Hit the Ellicottville Distillery for a tasting flight, then walk over to EBC for a pint on the patio. If you're feeling adventurous, the nearby wineries along Route 219 are a short drive and worth the detour.

7:00 PM

Dinner at Villaggio

Italian done right in a mountain village. The spring pasta specials are always a highlight — fresh, light, and perfect after a day on the trails. The fireplace is still going on cooler evenings.

9:00 PM

Live music on Washington Street

The bars are lively but not shoulder-to-shoulder. Catch a band at Balloons, grab a drink at Madigan's, or just wander — spring Saturday nights in EVL have an easy energy that's hard to replicate.

Sunday

Slow Down & Soak It In

9:00 AM

Brunch at EBC

The Ellicottville Brewing Company brunch is a ritual. Stuffed French toast, corned beef hash, and the legendary Bloody Mary with a pickle-infused beer chaser. Sit on the patio if the sun is out.

11:00 AM

Mountain biking at Holiday Valley

The mountain bike trails at Holiday Valley open as soon as conditions allow — usually mid-to-late spring. Flowy singletrack through the woods with views of the valley. Rentals available at the base lodge.

1:00 PM

Picnic at Nannen Arboretum

Pack a sandwich and spend an hour wandering the Nannen Arboretum. The Japanese garden, the herb garden, and the woodland paths are at their most beautiful in spring. It's free, it's peaceful, and it's quintessential EVL.

3:00 PM

Head home — or don't

You'll leave with mud on your boots, a new favorite restaurant, and the quiet conviction that you found something special. Spring in Ellicottville isn't the main event — it's the locals' secret. Now it's yours too.

Know Before You Go

Getting There

Ellicottville is about 1 hour south of Buffalo and 5.5 hours from NYC. Route 219 south from the I-90 is the scenic way in — and in spring, the drive is gorgeous.

What to Pack

Layers are key. Spring days can swing from 40s to 70s. Bring hiking boots, a rain jacket, and sunglasses. Evenings still get cool enough for a fleece.

Trail Conditions

Some trails can be muddy through mid-April. Check conditions before heading out — the village shops and local Facebook groups are the best source of real-time info.

Where to Stay

Spring rates are significantly lower than winter. B&Bs in the village are the move — walkable to everything, with that small-town charm cranked to eleven.

Don't Miss

The Nannen Arboretum in bloom, patio season on Washington Street, and the first mountain bike rides of the year at Holiday Valley.
