Drive in on Route 219

The drive into Ellicottville in October is half the experience. Route 219 south winds through the Enchanted Mountains, and when the foliage peaks, the hills look like they're on fire. Take your time — pull over at the overlooks.

Holiday Valley runs the chairlift for scenic rides during peak foliage. The view from the top — a 360-degree panorama of red, orange, and gold stretching to the horizon — is one of the best in the Northeast. Go early before the lines build.

Fall Festival on Washington Street

The Ellicottville Fall Festival draws 80,000+ people over two days. The street fills with craft vendors, food trucks, live music, and local artisans. It's the largest event in Western New York — and the energy is unreal.

Festival food crawl

Skip a formal lunch and graze the festival. Apple cider donuts, wood-fired pizza, smoked meats, kettle corn, local cheese — the food vendors alone are worth the trip. Wash it down with a craft cider from one of the tasting tents.

Escape the festival crowds for an hour and hike to one of the nearby overlooks. The Rock City State Forest trail is a short drive and rewards you with ancient rock formations surrounded by peak-color hardwoods.

This is the biggest night of the year in EVL. Every bar has live music, the streets are packed, and the festival energy carries well past midnight. The Gin Mill, Balloons, Madigan's — just follow the music.

One More Morning

You earned this. The Bloody Mary bar, the stuffed French toast, and the knowledge that you're sitting in the middle of the best fall weekend in New York. The patio is still warm enough in October if the sun is out.

The festival continues Sunday but with a mellower pace. This is when you find the best deals at the craft booths, have actual conversations with the vendors, and enjoy the music without fighting for a spot.

The arboretum in October is breathtaking. The maples blaze red, the oaks go gold, and the Japanese garden looks like a painting. Bring a camera — this is the shot you'll use for everything.

Grab an apple cider and a bag of cider donuts for the road from one of the farm stands on your way out. The drive home through the foliage is almost as good as the drive in. You'll be back — everyone comes back.

Fall Festival weekend (usually the second weekend in October) sells out months in advance. Book lodging as soon as dates are announced — this is not an exaggeration.

Getting There

Expect traffic on Route 219 during festival weekends. Leave early, take your time, and enjoy the drive. The foliage alone is worth the extra hour.

Peak Foliage

Usually peaks mid-October, but varies by year. Follow the Ellicottville Chamber social media for real-time foliage updates starting in late September.

What to Wear

Layers. October days can be 60s and sunny or 40s and breezy. A light jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and a flannel you don't mind getting cider on.
